English 9 Short Story Unit
Purpose:
To engage with literature in the form of short stories.
To understand the terminology of the short story.
To carefully consider the ideas presented by the authors of
the stories.
Evaluation:
Each lesson, we will consider one or story. Unless you are told differently, expect to
turn in all classwork at the end of class.
THERE WILL BE TWO (2) UNANNOUNCED QUIZZES ASKING BASIC
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PLOT OF THE STORY FOR THE DAY. READ THE STORY IN ADVANCE OF
CLASS. Each quiz will be worth 10 marks.
For the unit test you will be required to know general plot
points of all the stories that we read, as well as literary terms.
READING SCHEDULE
Read all stories
BEFORE class on the designated day. There will be two surprise quizzes on the
story of the day. Class time will not be scheduled for story reading. Unless
otherwise specified, all worksheets are due at the end of the class in which
they are assigned.

Unit Test 50 marks
|
Each classwork assignment will be marked out of 20. If
you miss a class, you are responsible for seeing me to get the assignment,
otherwise a zero will be recorded. You will not be permitted to make up
assignments after the unit is completed. (ie. don’t start worrying about
completing your work just before the term ends.)
Your writing mark will be based four writing assignments: two
short stories, a dialogue and an in-class writing assignment.
